Last week a friend of mine asked me to make her a fall wreath. Here's her text to me...um yeah, quite frankly, I'm not going to let you pay $150 for a wreath!
Of course, I agreed to make the wreath - if nothing else to stop her from spending way too much money on something that is an easy DIY.
She sent me pictures of a few wreaths she liked so I had an idea of what she was looking for. She wanted something bold with lots of color; she likes berries and pinecones but not too many pumpkins; and she wanted the "stuff" to go all the way around the wreath not like my mini burlap banner wreath which exposes a lot of the grapevine.
The next day I headed off to the craft store to find the stuff I needed. I started looking at the pre-made wreaths and realized at almost half off the $49.99 price tag plus a -$10 off $40 (sale or regular price) coupon there was pretty much no way I could make the wreath for less than that - especially not one that had leaves and "stuff" all the way around. I took a few pictures with my phone and quickly sent them to her. She said she liked this about that one and something else about another. Her biggest dislike was the amount of pumpkins on the wreaths.
I purchased the wreath she liked best (the one on the left, which was not actually $34.99), along with a stem of fake flowers. My intention was to remove some of the pumpkins and fill in the spots with the flowers.
That night we easily popped off three of the five pumpkins. (Next week on the blog - find out what I did with those styrofoam pumpkins!) You can literally just pull them out of their "stem" without even cutting. Turns out, there was so much else going on on this wreath that we decided we didn't even need to fill in the spots where the pumpkins had been. We just readjusted a few leaves and it looked perfect.
That's how you "make" a custom wreath on the cheap: buy a cheap one from the craft or dollar store and add or take away what you dis/like to make it exactly how you want it. There's no need to spend big bucks on a custom wreath that's just going to hang on your door getting beat up by the weather for two months of the year. Doesn't it make her front porch so beautiful?
If that bench looks familiar - it's been featured on the blog recently with a set of monogrammed burlap pillows. Yup, my dear friend commissioned me to make them for her too and they came out awesome!
